Summer guide: where to spend your summer days in Amsterdam?

Summertime in Amsterdam is amazing, especially when you’re blessed with a dose of Dutch sun. Can’t wait to spend your time like the locals in the most charming of cobbled European cities? Here’s a list of our favourite hotspots & activities in Amsterdam. From cruising through the canals, enjoying your lunch in beautiful courtyards, watching movies at open-air film festivals to sipping cocktails in a hidden bar. These activities will prove that summer is the perfect moment for your city trip to Amsterdam. Have fun!

Drink rosé in one of Amsterdam’s beautiful courtyards

From Hortus Botanicus, De Hoftuin, Morgan & Mees, The Plantage to Lion Noir; Amsterdam has plenty of beautiful courtyards. If you don’t have time to visit all of them, go to Lion Noir, located in the city centre. This restaurant and its lovely courtyard is definitely worth visiting. Perfect for a drink away from all hustle and bustle, overlooking the beautiful facades of the canal houses.

Strolling through the city parks

Go to Little Collins in The Pijp district, order a flatbread with pancetta and Parmesan (it’s as good as it sounds) and keep the crusts to feed to the ducks in the Sarphatipark. This city park is small but beautiful nevertheless. Another great park is the Vondelpark; the largest park in the city and a great place to escape Amsterdam’s hustle and bustle. Amongst the greenery, you'll find bike and walking paths, playgrounds, an open-air theatre and outdoor cafés and restaurants. Tip: ‘Proeflokaal ‘t Blauwe Theehuis’.

Quick rest between museum-hopping

Strolling through a park on a lovely summer day guarantees a good time. Especially when you’re visiting lots of museums and really could use a break. Create your own picnic (go to a local supermarket, like Albert Heijn) and eat between the tail-wagging dogs and whizzing Frisbees on the grassy Museumplein square. This square-slash-park is wedged between Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk museum. Sounds perfect, right?!

Take a plunge

Give the Dutch locals some warm sun rays, and you will see many flip-flops, rosé bottles and white bodies ready to get tanned. Apart from outdoor swimming pools, Amsterdam has some great natural swimming spots to dive into or dip your toes in. Our favourite? It’s at Vessel; Amsterdam’s vibrant hangout with a stunning view overlooking the IJ river. Vessel is an all-day destination to share delicious dishes and is the perfect place to dip your toes in the river. Ready to take a plunge? Bring your inflatable flamingo, and find Vessel at Revaleiland 500.

Open air film festival

As the weather warms up, the open-air cinema scene in Amsterdam kicks off. Check out ‘Pluk de Nacht’, ‘West Beach Film Festival’ and ‘World Cinema Amsterdam’ for the upcoming dates – these are 3 of the city’s best outdoor cinemas. Bring your sweater, your BFF’s and some popcorn. You’re welcome!

Cocktail o’clock

Amsterdam is home to a range of incredibly unique cocktail bars. As dusk settles, go for pre-dinner cocktails at Bardak. It’s the place for Tel Aviv street food and epic cocktails (Ferdinand Bolstraat 12). Next, go to one of Amsterdam’s most promising spots for innovative food and cocktails: Tales & Spirits (Lijnbaanssteeg 5-7). You’ll find another great cocktail place at Singel 460: Flying Dutchmen. It’s founded by the best bartender in the world - the Dutch Tess Posthumus. Last but not least: Vesper. A cosy living room bar where you will be welcomed with warm hospitality. Let’s shake it, baby - cheers!

Finger-licking-good food festivals

Amsterdam has many food festivals, so how do you choose? No worries, we’ve created a list so you can select the foodie events you want to visit this summer. (Spoiler: probably all.) From hot wings, ‘poffertjes’, wine masterclasses to a celebration of Caribbean cuisine - we present you the ultimate foodie festival guide.

Hop on a bike

Two-wheeling is a way of life in Amsterdam. It's how the locals commute to work or the university, go for drinks and meet a date for dinner. Abundant bike-hire shops make it easy to gear up and take a spin. Wondering where to go? Discover Amsterdam on your bike: here are 5 amazing cycling routes (tasty food stops included!). Pssst: do you stay at our hotel? Grab a cool city bike for free!

Ship ahoy, captain!

If locals aren't on a bike, they may well be on the water. Rent your own ‘bootje’ (boat) at Mokum Boat Rental. Don’t forget to bring some snacks and drinks. Loud music isn’t allowed, but if you keep it down a bit, you can enjoy your own fav tunes as well.

Hop aboard a canal boat

Did you know that more canals flow in Amsterdam than in Venice? So get ready to discover Amsterdam on a boat! Hop aboard a canal boat (preferably an open-air one) and cruise along Amsterdam’s stunning canals that passes iconic spots such as the Anne Frank House, the Jordaan, Rijksmuseum, and more.

Don’t skip this one while you are here! Canal cruising should definitely be on your (bucket) list because Tripadvisor just listed an Amsterdam canal cruise as the number one tourist experience on the planet! It won the 2022 Travellers’ Choice 'Best of the Best' Things to Do Awards. Swooping into second place in the global ranking? A Dubai desert trip that features quad-biking and a barbecue, while a guided tour of Hawaiian island Oahu’s North Shore ranks third. Let that sink in.

Organic market: Noordermarkt

Go to the famous Noordermarkt square at the heart of the picturesque Jordaan district, where you’ll find a flea market on Mondays, or enjoy the organic farmer’s market on a Saturday. Word is that it’s the best market in town.
